The Apollo missions, completed between 1967 and 1972, were achieved due to the magnificent co-operative effort of 400,000 men and women, and resulted in the miraculous feat of no deaths, six lunar landings, and over 32,000 photographs. To mark the 30th anniversary of the first landing, the Hayward Gallery in London held an exhibition in Summer 1999 of a selection of those photographs under the title "Full Moon". Indulge yourself in the catalogue of the show and it will take your breath away. Artist and photographer Michael Light has drawn on Nasa's huge archive to put together an archetypal lunar journey in images, from take-off to landing. It is awesome. To communicate the necessary density required a special black ink --"Luna Nero" was developed solely for the printing of this book, and the latest digital resources were used to process miles of black-and-white negatives and colour transparencies to a unique razor-sharp clarity. With five gatefold montage panoramas included, this is landscape photography at its best. Astronauts take their first steps in space, their cables attaching them to their mother craft like giant umbilical cords. The moody surface of the moon changes with every picture, resembling fried egg-white, Emmental cheese, and bubbling broth, magnificent desolation where humankind is the alien. Everything is shadow, scale, texture, trails. Ultimately space travel, like any journeying, is about where you come from rather than where you are going, and the pictures of the Earth taken from space are about as life-affirming as anything you will see. The final image, taken from a capsule that has landed in the Pacific Ocean, ironically shows a seascape redolent of the moon, but appropriately coloured Earth-defining blue. Andrew Chaikin, author of the definitive study of the Apollo missions A Man in the Moon, has written a well-observed essay to complement Light's sequence, but there is no doubting the stars of the show, so to speak. At a time when we've bewilderingly lost a sense of space, this luxurious and spiritual book brilliantly captures something of it anew. --David Vincent

This book is absolutely incredible! The quality of the photos is simply outstanding, making the moon shot feel like it just happened yesterday not 30 years ago. It brought back all the goosebumps I felt as a highschooler when the astronauts first stepped on the moon. Presenting the pictures separate from the text makes you focus entirely on the visual before you. The foldouts are so impressive and encompassing. In addition, the essay answered basic questions about the space program brought up by the photos but kept it short enough to not read like a history book. This is a book I'll return to again and again. Already I have run after friends, book in hand, shouting, "Look at this one! Look at THIS!" A fabulous additon to anyone's library but most especially for anyone with even the slightest interest in the space program. It offers an artist's interpretation and presentation of a truly amazing and life-altering event.

Who cares about words with a book like this! Full Moon is the greatest book ever and it has no text at all (except for the author, copywrite, et cetera...) Michael Light chose the most fascinating pictures of the history of our moon and told the most accurate history of the moon through it, better than any other book could. Every photograph in this book takes a lifetime to look at. And as someone else said, "If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this book would take a lifetime to read." Very true. Buy this book ASAP and cherish it forever!

The missions of the Apollo astronauts to the Moon & back yielded 32,000 extraordinarily beautiful photos, the record of a unique human adventure. Each page conveys the excitement, disorientation & awe that the astronauts felt as they were shot into space, explored an alien landscape & looked back home from space. If you've ever wanted to see what space flight was like this is the book. If you've ever wanted to get close to the surface of our nearest celestial body, this is it. A large, awe-inspiring volume with some fine, explanatory writing.

Full Moon shows you the moon as you never seen it before. The original NASA negatives were scanned at high resolution and processed to bring out their original beauty. Even photos you seen many times before come out with stunning clarity, crispness, and beauty. It also includes several spectacular gatefold panoramas of the rugged lunar terrain. These images could easily grace an art museum....Ansel Adams would have been proud if he took these photos himself. My only criticism is the choices of some of the photos....I would have chosen different ones in many cases. The worst example is that there are not one, but four, photos of a nondescript lunar crater called Timocharis taken from lunar orbit. Why not the spectacular shots of Copernicus and Tsychiovsky instead? However, these are small criticismsof a superb book. Clear off a space on your coffee table, this book deserves an honored place there.

I have read most of the books about manned space flight published to date. Although several of these books are outstanding, and provide an in-depth perspective that can only be expressed through the written word, none of them gives me the virtual moon-trip experience that this beautifully constructed book does. It's not just a book of beautiful photographs (and they are beautiful). There is appropriate text that accompanies the photos in a separate section. The very large photos are printed with NO text on the page to detract from the scenes displayed. Descriptive text is provided at the end of the book along with accompanying thumb-nail prints of the photos.Whatever NASA invested in educating the astronauts in photography paid-off. I'd love to see more!

Don't let the relatively high price of this book put you off. It's pictures cover all phases of a trip to the Moon and back, and show numerous images of all the places where humans have set down on the lunar surface. Features of the Moon that you may have only heard about before, like scarps and rilles, are suddenly there before your eyes. Many of the pictures are in color, which makes the bleakness of the Moon stand out all the more. If you want the best idea one can possibly get of what it's like to stand on the Moon, look no further.

This is a fantastic book! Who would have thought to use actual NASA negatives, a little photo technology, and presto, create a stunning book of Apollo photos? This is a great addition to anyone's personal library. However, I was slightly dissappointed. It says that the author wanted to avoid the more famous pictures, like the one of Buzz Aldrin on the moon. But why? I think the famous ones need to be seen like you are actually there instead of yellowed fourth and fifth generation duplicates more than the "never-before-published" photos. Other than that small dissapotinment, you ought to get it.

"Full Moon" is the ultimate "picture book" for those who were instrumental in the design and fulfillment of our Apollo Program. The images therein afford the rest of us, who "go along for the ride," a small inkling into the reason for a superhuman effort behind space exploration.May this wonderful testament to the human spirit engender many more giant leaps for mankind.
